Bipolar disorder is a form of mental illness in which the behavior of the patient is characterized by extreme swings from mania to depression.  This disease is very serious in the sense that it can lead to dangerous behavior including, but not limited to suicidal tendencies. It is also known as manic depression. Between the periods of extreme mood swings the patient may also exhibit spurts of normal behavior as well. During the agitated periods, the patient may seem restless, very energetic, to be of immense physical power, very reckless and also very talkative. This condition is described as manic. The mood may then immediately change to depression during which the subject becomes appears extremely weak, sad and to be in a state of despair. Because of this contradictive nature of the disease, it is difficult to diagnose the disease. The bout of this disease may vary from weeks to years.

A combination of medication and counseling is considered to be and is most often the recommended form of treatment for bipolar disorder. In extreme cases, the patients are subjected to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Another way of treating this disease is by using drugs. Several classes of drugs including antidepressants are used to fight this disease. The drugs help the patient to maintain a steady state of behavior for a long period of time. Psychotherapy when applied in conjunction with medication is also a powerful method of treatment.

During the depression phase of this disease, doctors often recommend antidepressants to combat the condition. Research has shown that some other materials such as lithium and lactimal are helpful in the initial stages of bipolar treatments.

With no works-for-all solution available for this disease unlike some of the other diseases, we can hope that with the rapid strides being made in medical research, bipolar disorder will be completely curable sometime in the near future.
